Mario Domínguez Esteban, MD, FEBU, is Chief of Section in the Department of Urology at Hospital Universitario Marqués de Valdecilla, Santander, Spain. He is also the Coordinator of the Uro-Oncology Unit, overseeing the diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of patients with metastatic prostate cancer, as well as the Pelvic Oncology Unit for localized prostate and muscle-invasive or refractory bladder cancer. His clinical expertise focuses on uro-oncology, minimally invasive surgery—particularly robotic oncologic surgery and holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP)—renal transplantation, as well as continuous medical education and research.
Dr. Domínguez Esteban obtained his Medical Degree from the Complutense University of Madrid (1999-2005) and completed his Urology residency at Hospital Universitario 12 de Octubre in Madrid (2006-2011). He earned the European Board of Urology (FEBU) certification in 2012 and has completed specialized training, including a Master’s in Prostate Cancer (University of Salamanca), a Master’s in Localized, Advanced, and Metastatic Renal Cancer (University of Salamanca), and a Master’s in Healthcare Management and Administration. He is currently finalizing his doctoral thesis on the role of PHI-RMN in prostate cancer diagnosis at the University of Cantabria.
Dr. Domínguez Esteban has extensive expertise in minimally invasive urological surgery, with certifications in robotic surgery (da Vinci Si and Xi), laser prostate vaporization, holmium laser enucleation, and REZUM therapy. He has been an external Observer-Fellow at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York (2010), training in uro-oncology and minimally invasive surgery.
His professional experience includes serving as a staff urologist at Hospital de La Zarzuela, Madrid, before joining Hospital Universitario Marqués de Valdecilla in 2011, where he was appointed Chief of Section in 2024. His work is strongly focused on uro-oncology and advanced surgical techniques, particularly robotic surgery and laser prostate enucleation. He is also actively engaged in clinical research, participating in multiple national and international trials on prostate and bladder cancer.
Dr. Domínguez Esteban is the author and co-author of numerous book chapters, peer-reviewed scientific publications, and congress presentations (both posters and oral communications). He frequently serves as a speaker and moderator in various scientific events, particularly in the field of uro-oncology. He is a reviewer for major urology journals such as Actas Urológicas Españolas, Archivos Españoles de Urología, and BMC Urology.
He is a member of the Spanish Association of Urology (AEU), the European Association of Urology (EAU), and the Spanish Urological Cancer Research Network (GUARD). Additionally, he is the founder and partner of Urología Mínimamente Invasiva SLP, a medical practice specializing in advanced urological treatments.
