Professor of Optics at the University of Cantabria since 1993. Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Zaragoza in 1982, conducting research on the Stark effect in plasmas by sub-Doppler laser techniques. From 1982 to 1993 Assistant Professor and Associate Professor at the University of Cantabria with research in photon statistics applied to light scattering methods. Guest researcher at the Royal Signals and Radar Establishment (Great Malvern, UK) in 1990, he started a new line of research in light scattering by particles and particle surfaces. Visiting professor at the Department of Physics at the University of California San Diego (USA, 1996), working in Plasmonics at the nanometer range. This is the backbone of his current research work. He has developed both numerical-computational and experimental (spectroscopy, scatterometry and polarimetry) work in Plasmonics and Nano-Optics. He has published over 200 articles in high impact journals (h=28) and has presented over 200 communications to national and international conferences, where he has participated either as a speaker (more than 20 invited) or as organizer. Co-author of four patents with members of the Army Research Laboratory in Maryland (Washington, USA) and also co-author of five other patents. Responsible of different research projects (including Thesis tutoring, Dissertations and Thesis work) both public (European Commission, National Research Programme, NATO, The Royal Society, USAITCA, etc.) and with private companies. He maintains permanent collaborations with other research groups, both in Spain and abroad (mainly in the US, Italy, France, Russia and UK). Co-founder of the Spin-off FOTOGLASS (www.fotoglass.es) dedicated to research and development in Optical Materials and Bio-Optics and awarded by the Cantabria Gob. as one of the best Technological Based Local Companies. Senior Member of Optical Society of America, member of the European Optical Society, the Electromagnetics Academy (USA) and the Spanish Society of Optics. Of the latter, he is the Chairman of the Education Committee.
