Currículum vitae

Joao Carlos Batista Liz holds a degree in Biology, specializing in Biotechnology, from the Complutense University of Madrid. His undergraduate thesis focused on the search for and identification of bacterial strains capable of degrading acyl-homoserine lactone (AHL), a molecule involved in the regulation of biofilm formation and other virulence factors in Gram-negative bacteria. He later completed a Master’s degree in Applied Microbiology to Public Health and Research in Infectious Diseases at the University of Alcalá de Henares. As part of his Master’s thesis, he carried out a one-year research stay at the National Center for Microbiology (CNM-ISCIII), within the Reference and Research Laboratory for Immunopreventable Viral Infections, where he worked on the molecular epidemiology of the rabies virus. He is currently a predoctoral researcher in the Molecular Biology and Biomedicine program at the University of Cantabria, funded through a PFIS contract from the Instituto de Salud Carlos III (ISCIII). He is a member of the Immunopathology Group at IDIVAL, where his work focuses on the research line “Characterization of the molecular basis of IgA vasculitis.” His research activity is centered on conducting the first single-cell transcriptome sequencing (scRNA-seq) study in IgA vasculitis (IgAV), as well as on genetic studies investigating the role of various genes—previously associated with other autoimmune diseases—in the pathogenesis of IgAV. The ultimate goal of his work is to elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying the disease and to identify new biomarkers to improve diagnosis, discover novel therapeutic targets, and facilitate the repurposing of existing drugs.
