EDUCATION 1977 Degree in Medicine & Surgery, University of Cantabria, Spain 1983 PhD in Medicine, University of Cantabria, Spain CAREER PROFILE Jesús Merino MD, PhD, Professor of Immunology & Chair of the Molecular Biology Department at the University of Cantabria, is a specialist in Rheumatology (1982) and Immunology (2001). From 1984-1986 he performed a posdoctoral training at the WHO Immunology Research and Training Center, University of Geneva, followed by a clinical career in Rheumatology and Immunology at the "Marqués de Valdecilla" Universitary Hospital in Santander (1987-1996). In 1997 he became Professor of Immunology at the University of Cantabria. At the present time, he is the director of the research group "Immunopathology of the Rheumatic Diseases" at the IDIVAL Institute. The scientific activity of Prof. Merino has been always focused in the study of the cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in the development of inflammatory/autoimmune diseases and in the search of new potential therapeutic targets for these processes. His group has developed several animal models of autoimmune diseases, such as systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis or psoriasis, among others. In these models they have analyzed the role of cell death or cell cycle regulators, such as Bcl2, A1, p21 or p27kip1, in the control of lymphocyte tolerance. In the last decade, they have extended their studies to other molecules such as the APOE lipoprotein or BAMBI, a plasma membrane regulator of the TGF signaling pathway. At the same time, they have stablished multiple collaborations with other research groups in Spain and abroad. Prof. Merino published over 80 peer-reviewed articles (H-Index: 23) and book chapters including articles in high-impact journals such as the Journal of Experimental Medicine, Arthritis & Rheumatism, Journal of Immunology, American Journal of Pathology, Journal of Biological Chemistry, among others. He is also author of two international patents.
