My professional development has been parallel to the evolution of the Nuclear Medicine Service of the Marqués de Valdecilla University Hospital since 1989, when I started my training as a MIR in Nuclear Medicine. During this time I had have the opportunity to participate in 9 research projects with funding obtained through a process of competitive selection. This department has been characterized by a continuous effort to be at the forefront of the Nuclear Medicine focusing its research work in the validation of new techniques, as well as in the expansion of clinical applications of existing ones, beeing pioneer in the validation of the clinical use of cerebral SPET in the study of cerebral vascular pathology, in neurodegenerative processes and in epilepsy, as well as in the application of molecular imaging techniques to the diagnosis of postoperative cardiovascular infections. Another of its most significant lines was the development of the use of nonspecific oncotrope radiotracers in the follow-up of thyroid cancer, and also to the location of parathyroid adenomas, and the characterization of mammographic lesions suspected of malignancy. With the availability of a radioguided surgery equipment, the validation program of the sentinel lymph node technique in breast cancer was developed and the technique for the localization of parathyroid adenomas was introduced. Since 2004 the Nuclear Medicine department has a PET / CT equipment and also an UPREP -cyclotron and synthesis laboratory - thanks to which it has been able to expand its research in the field of oncology with special focus on lymphomas, lung cancer, prostate cancer and more recently to myelomas. The possibility of synthesizing radiotracers with C11 has allowed to obtain radiotracers of the Beta-Amyloid protein and to participate in different lines of research on neurodegenerative diseases. And following the line of looking for new clinical applications for the existing techniques, in recent years an important research work has been done in the field of inflammatory vascular pathology and atheromatosis. The opportunity to participate in all these lines of research has allowed me to publish more than 100 papers in journals with impact factor, which have deserved more than 400 citations from other authors (web of science). I also have published more than 120 abstracts of papers presented at international congresses.
