I hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Cantabria. I obtained my PhD in 2016 within the Doctoral Program in Medicine and Psychiatry, receiving the distinction of summa cum laude for my dissertation titled “Immunogenetics of Pulmonary Tuberculosis: Influence of Major Histocompatibility Complex Polymorphisms, the KIR Gene Repertoire, and Other Immune System Genes”, supervised by Dr. María del Carmen Fariñas Álvarez.I am a University Expert in Cell Growth and Cancer, as well as in Marketing, both awarded by the UNED. I was the first medical resident trained in the Immunology Department at Marqués de Valdecilla University Hospital (1991–1994). In 1995, I received one of the two research grants awarded by the Spanish Multiple Sclerosis Foundation to young investigators under the age of 30 for the project “Study of Cytokines as Predictive Biomarkers of Disease Activity in Multiple Sclerosis.” From 1996 to 2006, I worked as a Field Specialist at Ingelheim D. & T., Innogenetics S.A.U., and Promega Biotech Ibérica, S.L. Since June 1st, 2006, I have served as a Specialist Physician in the Immunology Department at Marqués de Valdecilla University Hospital, where I am the Technical Supervisor responsible for the Immunogenetics and Histocompatibility Unit, as well as a Consultant in Immunodeficiencies.I am proficient in operating systems such as Windows (10, 7, Vista, XP) and Mac OS X. I have extensive experience with software tools for HLA and genetic analysis (UniMatch, Fusion, MatchIT, GeneMapper, BioEdit, Haploview, SBTEngine, NGSEngine, ChimerisMonitor, etc.), as well as web-based tools for the study of genetic variants (MutPred, HOPE, Human Splicing Finder, PolyPhen-2, BLAST, dbSNP, Genome Ensembl Browser, etc.) and office applications (Microsoft Office). I am also familiar with Laboratory Information Systems (Servolab, Modulab).I have broad knowledge and experience in all techniques related to the field of Immunology, with particular expertise in the following: HLA typing using various methodologies (PCR-SSO, PCR-SSP, PCR-SBT, NGS); KIR genotyping using PCR-SSO and PCR-SSP; Detection and identification of anti-HLA antibodies via Luminex technology and detection of other non-HLA antigens (GSTT1); Lymphocyte chimerism analysis using STRs and RT-PCR; Design and implementation of ELISA/Multiplexing assays for analyte determination on Luminex platforms; Sanger sequencing, mutation detection, and fragment analysis. I served as a member of the Valdecilla Hospital Tissue and Tumor Committee (12/2006–12/2016). I am an Honorary Member of the European Society for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics. Since 2009, I have been a Resident Tutor in the Immunology Department.I am a member of the Spanish Society of Immunology, the Spanish Transplant Society, the European Federation for Immunogenetics, and The Transplantation Society. I also participate in the Working Groups on Immunotherapy, Histocompatibility, and Immunodeficiencies of the Spanish Society of Immunology, as well as in the Spanish Working Group on Hematopoietic Transplantation.I serve on the Editorial Board of Mycobact Dis, Chin J of Biol, EC Pulm and Resp Med J, The Open Immunol J, and EC Bacteriol and Virol Res. I am also a reviewer for Cytokine, International Journal of Immunogenetics, Tissue Antigens (now HLA), BMC Medical Genetics, BMC Research Notes, BioMed Research International, Brazilian Journal of Microbiology, Infection, Genetics and Evolution, and Drug Design, Development and Therapy.
