Currículum vitae

Javier Vázquez-Bourgon is assistant professor of Psychiatry and Consultant Psychiatrist at the Department of Medicine and Psychiatry, University of Cantabria, Santander. He trained in Psychiatry at the Marques de Valdecilla University Hospital, University of Cantabria, in Santander (2004-2008). During his training in Psychiatry he carried out a 5-months training stage in Pharmacogenetics at the Neuropharmacology Section, Department of Psychological Medicine of the Institute of Psychiatry (King´s College London) in London, United Kingdom, under the direction of Maria Jesús Arranz. After his clinical training he continued his research activity through research posts at the Valdecilla Health Research Institute (IDIVAL) on clinical aspects of First Episode Psychosis, and through a research fellowship at the Department of Psychological Medicine of the Institute of Psychiatry in London, UK. He is currently a member of the research group in Non-Affective First Episode Psychosis of Cantabria (PAFIP) directed by Prof. Crespo-Facorro, and research collaborator of the research group CIBERSAM G26. His main areas of interest include the study the biological aspects of schizophrenia, in particular the factors underlying the physical health of patients with psychosis and the genetic effect on main clinical characteristics and endophenotypes of psychosis, such as brain morphology (imaging genetics), and neurocognitive deficits, clinical severity, treatment response and adverse effects occurrence (pharmacogenetics). Over the period 2005-2017, he has published 13 papers on MEDLINE in peer-reviewed psychiatric and neuroscience scientific journals, achieving a h factor 4. He has also produced or coauthored 16 chapters in international monographic or academic textbooks and he has co-edited 5 textbooks on diverse clinical aspects of psychiatry. He has been recently admitted as board member of the Doctorate School of the University of Cantabria, and is currently directing one doctoral thesis. Since 2011 he has directed several (5) continuing medical education (CME) courses on psychiatry treatment approaches at University Hospital Marques de Valdecilla and CIBERSAM, with competitive funding (local; Aula Valdecilla CME excellence program). And he has recently obtained a Next-Val 2017 "young investigator" and a Prim-Val 2017 competitive research grants (as PI and co-PI, respectively) for the study of the somatic health of patients with psychosis.
