Objetivos del proyecto
The COVID-19 pandemic has spread rapidly worldwide, significantly affecting Spain. In addition to the organic damage and the high mortality risk caused by the disease, there is evidence from other countries earlier hit and from previous health crises suggesting that the COVID-19 pandemic will also produced a significant psychological impact among those affected, but also among the general population and very significantly among health professional fighting it. Among the latter, the Primary Care professionals could be in significant high risk for developing psychological disorders since they are highly exposed to the disease, working regularly in direct contact with patients suffering COVID-19. Besides the suffering caused by the psychopathology, developing psychological symptoms can also affect the ability of professionals to perform their clinical tasks and could ultimately affect the normal functioning of the health system. The objective of this study is to evaluate the presence of psychological symptoms in Primary Care workers and explore the existence of risk factors that determine a greater severity. The results will allow us to design proposals for mental health strategies to be implemented in this and future health crises and protect more effectively the mental health of Primary Care professionals. For this purpose, we propose a double-phase study methodological design. The Phase 1 will consist of a psychopathology screening among Primary Care professionals at the regional level. Phase 2 will consist of a specialized psychiatric evaluation to be performed on a randomly selected subsample, in order to confirm the preliminary data observed in the Phase 1 and to obtain a precise evaluation of psychopathology severity. To ensure the successful development of the project, we have formed a research group with experienced researchers from the two areas of interest; Primary Care and Mental Health. This collaboration provides a multidisciplinary research approach and complementary perspectives of the subject of study. And it will also enhances the recruitment of study subjects. In a pandemic crisis like the COVID-19 it is crucial for public health managers and specialists to conduct local epidemiological research to obtain accurate data of the psychological impact of the pandemic in order to design appropriate targeted interventions. The present study will provide to public health managers and mental health specialists, the necessary data for the design and development of mental health policies and interventions directed to enhance and protect the mental health of Primary Care professionals during the COVID-19 crisis.
