Marcos López Hoyos

He earned his University Degree in Medicine and Surgery in 1992, and his PhD in Medicine from the University of Cantabria in 1997. He completed his specialist training in Immunology at the Marqués de Valdecilla University Hospital between 1993 and 1996. Since 2001, he has continuously secured competitive funding from FIS-ISCIII. His field of work has been the study of immunological tolerance mechanisms, involved in autoimmune diseases and solid organ transplant rejection; both in animal models and human pathology, where he has developed and implemented new clinical biomarkers. Since May 2016 he has been the Head of the Immunology Department at the Marqués de Valdecilla University Hospital. Furthermore, he is an Associate Professor (tenured) of Immunology at the University of Cantabria since February 2021. In the last three years, he has focused his research on the immune response to SARS-CoV-2. Since 2021, he has been leading the Cantabria Cohort, a versatile and multidisciplinary precision medicine project aiming to enroll 50,000 subjects.
