Carolina Alonso González

Carolina Alonso-González is a Full Professor at Dept. of Physiology and Pharmacology, School of Medicine, University of Cantabria. She is also an investigator in the Melatonin and Cancer group of the University of Cantabria, integrated in the IDIVAL Research Institute. She received a B.Sc. in Biology from University of Oviedo in 2002 and PhD from University of Cantabria in 2009, receiving both the Extraordinary Doctorate award and the University Social Council award to the best PhD in Medical Biosciences in 2010. During her PhD formation, she was a visiting fellow at the Dept Biological Sciences, University of Reading, UK, which was followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at the School of Pharmacy, University of London (UCL), UK. Professor Alonso-González research activity has been focused on the study of melatonin and its antitumor actions in hormone-dependent tumors such as breast cancer, as well as the ability of this indolamine to sensitize breast tumors to radiotherapy or chemotherapy. She has published over 40 peer-reviewed articles and four book chapters, and has a H-index of 25 (Scopus). She is a guest editor of the Special Issue “New strategies in cancer pharmacotherapy: Development of hormonal antineoplastic drugs, cytotoxic drugs and targeted therapies” published in IJMS journal, being also a member of this journal editorial board. During this time, she has participated on over 10 grants to carry out research projects of national calls and international. Besides that, she has been the principal investigator of a NEXT-VAL project (NVAL16/01) from IDIVAL, focused on the possible clinical use of melatonin in the treatment of breast cancer as adjuvant to chemotherapy and / or radiotherapy. During these years Prof. Alonso-González has made more than 30 communications to international congresses. She has been an evaluator of articles for international high impact factor journals indexed in the JCR and her research activity is supported by the recognition of 3 six-year periods by CNEAI.
